Product Description
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a strict grain-free, lactose-free, and sucrose-free dietary regimen intended for those suffering from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (both forms of IBD), celiac disease, IBS, cystic fibrosis, and autism. It is based on the work of Elaine Gottschall, who wrote Breaking the Vicious Cycle, which introduces the SCD and explains the importance of eliminating certain carbohydrates in order to alleviate digestive ailments such as IBD, IBS, and celiac disease. For those suffering from gastrointestinal illnesses, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) offers a method for easing symptoms and pain, and ultimately regaining health. Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet(TM) offers a diverse and delicious collection of 150 SCD-friendly recipes, that includes over 80 dairy-free recipes. The easy-to-make and culturally diverse recipes featured in the book include breakfast dishes, appetizers, main dishes, and desserts such as -- Hazelnut-Vanilla Pancakes, Olive Sandwich Bread, Chicken Satay, Roasted Bass with Parsley Butter, Thin Crust Pizza, Gretel's Gingerbread Cookies, and Mango Ice Cream. It is accompanied by 40 full-color photos that will inspire you to get cooking again. In addition, personal anecdotes accompany each section of this book. You can find out more about this book on-line at www.scdrecipe.com/cookbook/.

good resource for friends of people with IBD and other issues July 7, 2008 J. Traub I have tried 3 recipes from this book and in each case, the food was easy to make and was very flavorful, enough so that I didn't miss any wheat or rice. Like another reviewer noted, with the exception of almond flour, I was able to find all the ingredients at my local supermarket (and I found almond flour at the local health food store). I have several friends on a gluten free diet. This book gives me creative suggestions for cooking when they come over, so we're not just eating meat and vegetables all the time. I especially like the snacks and dessert sections as these are the hardest for me to consider when people come over who have limited diets. I'm buying a copy for my friend with a child on the austism spectrum who has eliminated gluten from their diet.
This is a well designed book with many attractive pictures. I also like the personal stories and commentary throughout the book from a multicultural family. I am very impressed that both Indian and Italian foods were able to be adjusted to suit this diet. Its hard for me to believe that dietary changes are not emphasized by doctors for things as obvious as Colitis. I hope more books like this will change their minds.
Great Recipes July 2, 2008 A. Hurlbut (New Haven, CT) This book is a great addition to your kitchen cookbook collection. When I am completely bored with the usual 4 dishes for my family, I've consulted Raman Prasad's new cookbook to add spice to the evening meal. My kids love it, and the dishes are easy and fun to prepare. It has even inspired our youngest to put on the apron and join in cooking. Thanks for keeping us all more healthy with delicious new recipes!
A fantastic achievement June 26, 2008 Joel L. Thompson (Providence, RI United States) Fortunately, I do not have medical problems that require the specific carbohydrate diet, but friends and family members do. Instead of struggling over what to serve I feel like I can chose anything from this book and have it be a success. The recipes are simple, elegant, and delicious. I love the ease of this book and recommend it to anyone.
Wonderful book for food fanatics! June 25, 2008 Quyen T. Truong (RI, USA) As a food fanatic always looking for new ideas, I very much enjoyed the idea of healthy eating that this book espouses. I do not have any dietary problems, but ran across this book while researching how to eat well for friends with sensitive tummies. This book is perfect, providing an idea of a healthy diet for many types of food sensitivities. The recipes are easy, no-frills and full of great ideas for the kind of balanced, protein and veggie-rich healthy eating prescribed by food enthusiasts such as Michael Pollan. Moreover, with all the research coming out about wheat sensitivities and gluten allergies, this book seems timely, relevant, and accessible to veteran and new cooks of all types. I especially enjoyed the vibrant photos, wonderful anecdotes about Raman's family, and easy-to-deliver recipes. The full range of courses were also helpful. I loved the appetizers and dessert sections in particular. Innovative ideas of uses of almond flour also helped immensely. I made and enjoyed most the recipes in this book, and would definitely subscribe to this diet as a healthy, wheat/gluten-free alternative to traditional carb-rich American fare. I would love to see more books like this on the market!
Great for anyone interested in healthy eating June 24, 2008 Danielle Aubert (Detroit, MI) I acquired a copy of 'Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet' a couple of months ago and had a great time reading through Prasad's intimate and often funny stories about the various dishes. I was intrigued by the instructions for making one's own yogurt (something that I enjoy every morning). I would love to be able to make my own yogurt from ingredients I knew to be natural, local and organic. I do not follow the SCD diet or have any kind of dietary restrictions but my partner avoids gluten and dairy. Many of the recipes in Prasad's SCD cookbook offer interesting gluten-free alternatives to things like bread and desserts - food groups we usually end up missing out on all together. What I really liked about the collection of recipes was the emphasis on natural ingredients, the culturally diverse assortment of dishes, and Prasad's personal anecdotes accompanying various recipes. The photography is beautiful, and the recipes are well laid out and easy to follow!
